After weeks of glorious sunshine, the weather took a turn on the day of our much-anticipated picnic. A dull sky and the threat of rain loomed—but that didn’t deter over 160 residents and their guests from gathering in the back garden, ready to celebrate and have fun.
From the moment you stepped through the hedge gateway, the air was alive with the sound of music. Live jazz by Isaac Okah filled the garden as he sang a variety of songs, many by request. Starting in the centre, Isaac made his way around the tables, serenading residents to their delight and keeping spirits high throughout the afternoon.
Children flocked to the corner of the garden where Dave the Balloon Artist from Symply Balloons worked his magic. He crafted everything from regal headdresses to beloved animal figures—and of course, the ever-popular balloon swords for budding adventurers.
Our buffet tables were a highlight this year, overflowing with delicious Lebanese and Mediterranean dishes catering to every taste. With allergens clearly labelled, everyone could enjoy the feast worry-free.
Meanwhile, the corner shed was transformed into The Potters Tavern, with Michael behind the bar serving specialty beers, strawberry cider, Pimms, and soft drinks. Charles assisted with Pimms mixing, doing a stellar job that kept guests coming back for more.
The event was further graced by the presence of the Deputy Lord Mayor, Louise Hyams, who looked splendid in her regalia and—rumour has it—was spotted dancing with Cllr Dean and other guests. “A first for Westminster Council!” someone remarked.
A heartfelt thank you goes to GEGRA and especially Marcelle for her incredible organisation, along with volunteers from team GEG—Matthew, Michael, and Charles —as well as Grove End Housing and Aspire Homes for sponsoring the event.
